Crane operators and crane mechanics with at least 1 year’s experience.
The course is intended as a preparation for assessment and is designed to impart the necessary skills to allow the personnel to operate the cranes and use lifting gear safely and efficiently when moving items of plant and machinery about the offshore installation.
By the end of the course delegates will be able to:-
- Operate the crane safely in accordance with manufacturers handbook and accepted codes of practice
- Demonstrate knowledge of the concepts set out in Company, National and International standards
- Demonstrate an understanding of the controls of the particular model used during the training
- Demonstrate knowledge of the proper use of lifting tackle
- Estimate the weight of loads
- Use appropriate communications
- Part 1 – Onshore. General Operating Conditions, permit to Work, Sea states, Beaufort scale, operations in darkness and/or adverse weather, platform general alarm, Banksman, hand signals, blind lifts, radio procedures, crane safety equipment, crane driver responsibilities, crane equipment and it’s function, crane goods housekeeping/maintenance routines, crane certification, logs, records
- Platform and Vessel work – General Procedures. Crane operation, advanced procedure/preparations, Manifests, Cargo, dangerous goods, offloads/backloads, bunkering hoses, mooring principles, special operations, well services, diving operations, conveyance of personnel, helicopter movements
- Function and maintenance of Crane. Vicinity and Pre-use crane checks, present procedures, SL1 and Data Logger (where fitted), understanding Load/radius limits, safe operation, automatic swell compensation, slack rope, cut out devices, emergency procedures for various overload situations and shutdown procedures
- Part 2 – Offshore (Optional) A2 day offshore, fully hands on crane operation period where the tutor will assess: Driving ability, general aptitude, ability to work with Banksmen, radio procedures, vessel work ability, machine awareness, ability to work on own initiative, understanding of daily start-up routine and ability to perform weekly maintenance in presence of assessor
Following the theoretical elements of the course, a further period, determined by the level of candidates competency, is spent in a fully “hands on” operating role. During this period the instructor will assess the operators general aptitude and level of confidence.
In addition, the operator will be observed and where necessary assisted in the undertaking of pre-use/daily/weekly/monthly checks and inspections.
The operator will be assessed for all round performance with particular attention being paid to safe operation of the crane.
Certificates will be issued on successful completion. |
